If you’ve started experiencing hair loss due to male pattern baldness or other medical conditions, you’ll know how much it can affect your self esteem.
Still, if you adopt the right treatment plan it can make a big difference – both to your wellbeing and your head.
Happy Head and Keeps are two of the most well-known players in the field of hair loss solutions. Both offer convenient subscriptions for hair growth products that can be delivered to your door, so long as you live in the USA.
However, they approach their product selection and customer experience differently. If you’re seriously considering either Happy Head or Keeps, you need to have a full understanding of what sets them apart from one another.
Happy Head and Keeps at a Glance
Happy Head
This platform is best known for its personalized, dermatologist-led approach to treating hair loss.
Each prescription is tailored to your scalp. You can adjust the formula strength and ingredients with help from experts.
This level of customization comes at a higher price relative to standard hair loss treatments.
Keeps
Keeps offers a straightforward, affordable approach to tackling hair loss.
Plans focus on proven treatments like minoxidil and finasteride. These are available in a variety of formats, like foams and sprays.
This means Keeps is a great choice for those who just want a low-cost, mainstream hair regrowth solution.
Product Offerings
Happy Head
As outlined above, Happy Head is best known for offering prescription-strength, customizable hair loss treatments.
These mainly consist of topical solutions containing ingredients like minoxidil, finasteride, and dutasteride in concentrations tailored to your needs.
The platform also offers oral medications. These include standard treatments like finasteride and minoxidil capsules. Happy Head also sells ‘SuperCapsules’ containing finasteride, minoxidil, and vitamin D3.
The website offers products for supporting hair care like thickening shampoos and conditioners. There are also some hair growth supplements containing vitamins and minerals like biotin, collagen, keratin, Saw Palmetto, ashwagandha, and Vitamins A & D.
Keeps
Keeps’ main focus is on FDA-approved standardized hair loss treatments.
These include oral finasteride tablets for daily use, as well as topical minoxidil (available as a solution or a foam).
One of Keeps’ most popular products is a topical finasteride and minoxidil gel that can be applied directly to the scalp. It contains 0.25% finasteride and 5% minoxidil.
Like Happy Head, Keeps also offers various thickening shampoos and conditioners to maintain a healthy scalp and (in theory) making thinning hair look thicker. These contain natural ingredients like biotin, caffeine, green tea, and saw palmetto.
Customization
Happy Head
This platform’s main raison d’être is to offer customized hair regrowth solutions. In other words, when you sign up you’re asked to fill in a detailed intake form about your medical history. This then forms part of a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist.
Consulting with a medical professional who specializes in hair loss means that they can add or remove active ingredients according to your needs. Crucially, it also means that the dermatologist can change the concentrations of different ingredients
This is especially important for people with sensitive skin or who have experienced adverse side effects from hair loss treatments in the past. Tailored treatments can also be more effective for those who’ve tried standardized products but found they didn’t stimulate hair regrowth.
Keeps
Keep’s main focus is on standardized solutions, available in tablet form, as well as topical solutions and gels.
The concentrations and types of ingredients in products are fixed. On the plus side, this means you can benefit from proven, straightforward solutions for reversing hair loss. There’s minimal decision making, as you can simply sign up for a subscription via the website and receive the exact product you ordered.
However, if the solutions don’t work for you or you start to experience side effects like scalp irritation there’s no easy way to rework the formula for your body.
Pricing
Happy Head
So far, we’ve gone into great detail about Happy Head’s topical solutions, the formulas for which are put together by dermatologists and tailored to your skin specifically.
Still, this personalized model is reflected in its pricing. Custom topical solutions generally cost between $59 and $119 per month depending on the ingredients and concentrations.
This does include the cost of a consultation with your dermatologist, and while treatment is ongoing you can have a free followup appointment e.g. if you need to change the formula as you’re experiencing side effects.
Oral finasteride tablets cost $24 for a 1-month supply, which is more than similar products from competing platforms like Keeps.
New subscribers can benefit from discount offers. For example, if you sign up for the ‘SuperCapsule’ (containing minoxidil, finasteride, and D3) you’ll pay $59 per month for the first six months and $79 per month after that.
The same deal is offered for Happy Head’s topical minoxidil and finasteride solution, though you could likely end up paying more than that if your dermatologist adds further ingredients. On the plus side, this solution contains 8% minoxidil – a much higher concentration than in topical solutions offered by competitors like Keeps.
Shipping is free to the USA for all orders.
Keeps
If Happy Head charges premium prices for its customized offerings, then Keep is definitely the budget option.
For instance, oral finasteride tablets are available for $17.78 per month for a three-month supply on your first order, though you’ll need to pay for this upfront i.e. $53.33 total. After this, you’ll need to pay $26.67 per month.
The above-mentioned topical and finasteride gel works out at $40 per month for new subscribers, though again you’ll need to order at least 3 months supply in advance i.e. $120 total. After that, it costs $60 per month.
One peculiarity with Keeps’ pricing is there doesn’t seem to be any discount for ordering a larger supply of products if you’re a new subscriber.
For example, the monthly price for its minoxidil solution costs $7.33, $7.87, or $7.80 per month if you want supplies for 3, 6 or 12 months respectively. After your first order however, the prices do come down and you will save money by ordering more in one go.
There’s also a $5 fee per shipment, no matter what product you order.
Subscription Models
Happy Head
The platform mainly follows a monthly shipping model, though it also lists prices for one-off purchases for selected products.
For instance, you can buy Happy Head’s hair thickening shampoo for $21 per month for the first month, then $30 per month thereafter. Alternatively you can pay $36 to just buy it once.
Certain products can be ordered in bulk. For instance, as we’ve learned, Happy Head offers oral finasteride tablets for $24 per month. You can also buy a 2-month supply for $48 or a 3-month supply for $72 but, as you can see, no discount is offered for doing so.
As we’ve already discussed, Happy Head also offers generous discounts to first-time subscribers. For example, its ‘Topical Supersolution’ costs $59 per month for the first 6 months, then $99 per month thereafter. This amounts to savings of around $180 to regular subscribers.
You can pause or cancel your subscription at any time. Happy Head also offers a six month guarantee, which ensures you can receive a full refund for the most recent month’s supply of your treatment during that time.
Keeps
Most Keeps products are available in shipments of three, six, and twelve month’s supply. As we’ve learned, there’s not much advantage for new subscribers to order more than three month’s worth of a product, as it actually costs more to do so. However, discounts are available after your first order.
Although Keeps makes it fairly simple to cancel a subscription via text or phone call, the website says that all purchases are final, supposedly because any treatments dispensed for you can’t be given to other patients due to ‘consumer safety regulations’.
That means you likely won’t receive a refund for any unused part of your subscription, though Keeps does promise to replace defective or damaged products.
Who should choose Happy Head?
Happy Head is likely to be your best option if you:
- Want a fully personalized hair restoration solution.
- Have found that standard treatments didn’t work for you.
- Have sensitivities like skin allergies.
- Value being able to change the formula for your treatments over time.
Who should choose Keeps?
Keeps may be the wisest choice if you:
- Are just starting your hair loss journey and want to try standard products.
- Prefer products that are easy to order and use.
- Want to save money on your hair loss treatment.
- Have no known sensitivities to medications.
Final Thoughts
Both Happy Head and Keeps are excellent solutions for treating hair loss, but the right one to choose will depend on your needs.
Happy Head excels when it comes to medical oversight, given it uses dermatologists – not just general medical practitioners.
These experts can help you to develop a customized formula for your scalp, so long as you’re willing to invest a little more.
Keeps is the better choice for people who want a straightforward, no-frills solution that uses FDA-approved ingredients to effectively trigger hair regrowth. The platform’s products cost much less than Happy Head in some cases, but remember that if you experience any adverse effects from using its products the formula can’t be changed. That means your only choice is to cancel your subscription, for which you won’t get a refund. Ultimately, the best solution is the one that most closely matches your needs, preferences, and budget.
